Christendom’s men’s rugby team cannot be stopped. After three resounding wins at home to start the year, Christendom hit the road for the first time and experienced a similar result, defeating Washington & Lee University 60-0. Elsewhere, women’s volleyball split a tri-match at Mid-Atlantic Christian University and women’s soccer fell 1-0 to Hagerstown.
Since the start of Christendom’s 2021-22 men’s rugby season, the team has played with high expectations. Before the season even began, they received a #1 ranking from National Collegiate Rugby — a ranking they have lived up to through the first four games of their fall regular season. After 74-7, 64-0, and 91-5 wins against division rivals, Christendom traveled to Washington & Lee University for their first away game of the season.
Washington & Lee entered the match also undefeated, raising the stakes for the matchup. Quickly, the men’s rugby team made it clear they would not be leaving Washington & Lee defeated, with the team scoring six tries in the first half of the game alone. Christendom put up four more tries in the second half, ultimately winning 60-0 — their second shutout of the season. Five players in total scored their first tries of the season, marking further progress for a team pushing for another National Championship run.
Down in North Carolina, the women’s volleyball team competed in their third tri-match of the season, taking on Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Lenior College. In the first game, Christendom played well against MACU, shutting them out in straight sets for the fourth time this season. Christendom did not fare as well in their second game against Lenior, ultimately coming up short 3-2 in a hard-fought match.
The women’s soccer team played the only home game of the weekend, taking on Hagerstown for the second time this season in their penultimate match of the year. The game ended up being one of the most suspenseful of the season for Christendom, with Hagerstown going up early 1-0 before both defenses fought back for the rest of the game. That score ended up holding, with Christendom losing 1-0.
A string of mostly away games will continue for Christendom Athletics this coming week, with the men’s rugby team playing the University of Virginia down in Charlottesville and women’s soccer taking on Potomac State in their final game of the season. Women’s volleyball will play one game at home against Hollins University at home this week on Thursday before going on the road for another tri-match against Appalachian Bible and the Crown College.
