Christendom’s men’s and women’s basketball teams returned from Christmas break with key road wins to start 2022, including an overtime thriller on the road from the women’s team.

Both teams ended 2021 with identical winning records, going 3-1 to start their respective seasons. Each started the new semester away from campus, traveling up to Howard Community College in Maryland to take on the Dragons. Despite strong efforts on both teams, including from John Paul Vander Woude for the men and Miranda Keller for the women, they left with losses to start the year — firing both teams up for their next road games.

Traveling to Patrick Henry College, the women’s team came back with a vengeance, defeating them in a blowout 78-17. Catherine Thomas, Lili Speier, and Agnes Wingate all contributed to the onslaught with each walking away with double-doubles — including a 24 point performance from Thomas.

With a 1-1 start to 2022, the women’s team traveled back to Maryland again to take on Anne Arundel CC, ready to put away another resounding victory. Anne Arundel put up a strong fight, however, with the first three quarters remaining tight. After Anne Arundel took the lead in the fourth quarter, Christendom fought back and forced the game into overtime.

The 5-minute overtime period was tight throughout, and the game was tied with 7 seconds left after a free throw from Anne Arundel tied the game. After the free throw, Christendom called timeout and drew up a play for Thomas to get the ball at the free-throw line. The play worked beautifully, as Thomas buried the 15-footer to win the game for Christendom and raise their record to 5-2.

The men’s team looked to even out their 2022 record as well on the road, traveling up to Patrick Henry. Led by Vander Woude and Owen Kennedy, Christendom took the lead early and never looked back, ultimately winning 87-42. Vander Woude scored 22 points and Kennedy scored 18, while Mike Evich came in late off the bench and put up 11 points as well, helping raise the men’s record to 4-2.

Both teams will next play Regent University this weekend on Saturday, January 29.
