Christendom’s men’s soccer team is back over .500 after handily defeating Mid-Atlantic Christian 9-0 at home over Homecoming Weekend. The women’s soccer team, meanwhile, took a tough loss to Hagerstown 3-0 at home, and the women’s volleyball team split a tri-match on the road.
The men’s soccer team has continued to strengthen as the season has gone on, coming back from an initial 0-2 hole to get to above .500 by the middle of September. The team took a couple of tough losses and a tie in the past couple weeks, dropping their record to 4-5-1, before winning decisively against Penn State Beaver 4-1 at home on Tuesday, October 3, raising their record to 5-5-1 again. The team looked to ride this momentum in front of a large Homecoming Weekend crowd at home on Saturday, taking on Mid-Atlantic Christian for the first time this season.
Christendom took control of the game from the opening whistle, with Sean Corcoran scoring within the first four minutes of play. Aidan Oakley followed ten minutes later, with Corcoran scoring again to close the first half — 3-0 in favor of Christendom. Corcoran rounded off his day with a hat trick within minutes of the second half start, before ceding way to the rest of the Christendom offense for the rest of the game. Michael Townsend scored a hat trick of his own, and Niall Maguire and John Hill scored as well, giving Christendom a 9-0 victory. The team now stands at 6-5-1 on the season, with their next game coming on the road against Patrick Henry on Wednesday, October 11.
Also at home, the women’s soccer team looked to bounce back after a tough two weeks on the road, including back-to-back heartbreaking 1-0 losses. Taking on Hagerstown Community College for the second time this season, Christendom fought hard against the team, but ultimately came up short 3-0. Christendom now stands at 7-5 on the season and will next play Penn State Mont Alto at home on Wednesday, October 11.
The women’s volleyball team, playing on the road, looked to take a tri-match at Penn State Mont Alto, starting the day off strong with a 3-0 win over Penn State Du Bois. Nora Ross again led the team in scoring with 13 points, with Elizabeth Heisler not far behind with ten minutes and Catherine Brezinsky with 9. The second game, however, proved much harder, with Christendom falling to Penn State Mont Alto in straight sets. The team now stands at 7-10 on the season, with their next game coming at home against Trinity on Wednesday, October 11.
