Christendom’s men’s rugby team came from behind to tie the University of Virginia (UVA) in the final seconds of a match on Saturday, forcing a 24-24 draw with the conference rival. The game pushed Christendom to a 3-1-1 record in the regular season, with one game left before the start of tournament play for National Collegiate Rugby. Meanwhile at home, the women’s volleyball team won back-to-back games, while the women’s soccer team dropped a tough game to Johnson & Wales.

The men’s rugby team, following a resounding win over Washington & Lee to close September, traveled down to Charlottesville, Virginia, to take on the University of Virginia for the first time this season. UVA jumped ahead early and held a tight lead for most of the game, holding off Christendom’s offense. As the seconds counted down to close the second half, however, Hugh Wingate grabbed the ball and had an amazing run down the field, scoring a try. Chris Santschi kicked the conversion, ensuring a 24-24 tie for Christendom. The team will take on Roanoke at home on October 28 to close their rugby 15s regular season.

Back at home, the women’s volleyball team looked to bounce back after splitting a tri-match on the road last weekend. Taking on Trinity on Wednesday, Christendom took control of the game from the first set and never looked back. Nora Ross led the team with 12 points, with Regina Cousino and Adrienne McShurley not far behind 10 and 9 points respectively.

On Friday, the team took on Appalachian Bible in a rematch, after falling to them in straight sets on the road at the end of September. Christendom fought hard in the first set to pull off a 25-23 win but fell in the second 25-17. They cruised through the third set, before both teams fought hard in the fourth and final set of the game. Christendom ultimately pulled ahead and won the set 28-26, securing a 3-1 victory over Appalachian. Ross again led the team with 16 points, while Elizabeth Heisler scored 14 and Catherine Brezinsky scored 12.5. The team now stands at 9-10 on the season, with their final two games of the regular season coming on the road in a tri-match at Regent University on October 20.

Also at home, the women’s soccer team fell to Johnson & Wales 3-0 — their third straight loss and sixth in their past seven. They will aim to reverse course on the road against Penn State Brandywine on Friday, October 20.
