Christendom College’s men’s basketball team took down Central Penn in a thriller on Tuesday night, overcoming a late surge from Central Penn to win 77-72.
After a slow start to the season, the men’s basketball team has been playing great ball of late, kicked off by the team’s dramatic buzzer beater win over Regent University on February 21. They aimed to continue building late-season momentum versus Central Penn on Tuesday, jumping to a 44-39 lead by the end of the first half. Bobby Vander Woude led the way from the jump, powering the Christendom offense with 19 first half points, with Luke Vander Woude not far behind with 16 of his own.
Central Penn refused to go down without a fight, however, coming back to take the lead with 13 minutes left to play. Christendom was able to retake the lead two minutes later, but it was a fight the rest of the way. Central Penn was able to take the lead again with under five minutes left to play, before Bobby Vander Woude made a clutch three-pointer to regain the lead for Christendom. Central Penn would tie the game again just a minute later, with both teams stalemating until the two-minute mark. Bobby Vander Woude again gave the lead back to Christendom — a lead they would hold the rest of the way, ultimately coming out on top 77-72.
Bobby Vander Woude finished with one of his best lines of the season with 33 points and 9 rebounds, with Luke Vander Woude finishing with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Luke Ross also showed up in the tight game, scoring 13 points and making 5 rebounds.
The team will next take on Bucks County on Saturday, February 21, at home.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team bounced back from a tough two-game losing streak to end January, winning the first two games of February handily against Penn State Mont Alto and Washington Adventist respectively. They looked to keep rolling against Johnson & Wales this past weekend — but Johnson & Wales had different ideas. From the first quarter onwards, Johnson & Wales held the lead and never looked back, handing Christendom a tough 66-39 loss.
Mary Pennefather did her best in the defeat, dropping 25 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
The team will next take on Trinity at home on Thursday, February 19.
