Christendom College will not hold classes and will close administrative offices on Friday, January 20, to join thousands at the fiftieth annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. — the first in a post-Roe America.
Just last year, Christendom led the March for Life through the streets of Washington as the nation awaited the results of the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court case. In June of 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, making abortion no longer a constitutional right in the United States. Christendom’s student body, faculty, and staff will celebrate the overturning of Roe at the March on January 20, while continuing to march in defense of the unborn everywhere.
The college will again charter buses so that the entire college community can attend the March free of cost. Along with thousands of others in D.C., Christendom students will sing hymns, pray the rosary, and contribute to the enthusiastic pro-life atmosphere as they march from the National Mall to the Supreme Court.
Since the college’s founding in 1977, Christendom has proudly stood for the rights of the unborn, with students, faculty, staff, and alumni passionately joining in the cause. As a college, Christendom has not held classes on the day of the March each year so that the entire college community could attend. The college has been a sponsor of the March and even led it on five different occasions — the most for any college — including this past January.
The student body has joined in the pro-life movement in many other ways as well since 1977, including through the college’s pro-life club Shield of Roses. Created in the year of the college’s founding, Shield of Roses has left campus early on Saturday mornings for over 45 years to travel to a nearby abortion clinic and pray for an end to abortion.
Over the years, the group has seen the fruits of their prayerful protest, with two abortion clinics prayed at by Shield of Roses shutting down. The group’s efforts have been applauded by many, including the Diocese of Arlington’s Bishop Michael Burbidge, with the bishop joining the group on multiple occasions.
Christendom has many alumni who are active in the pro-life movement as well, whether through fighting the legal battle in Washington D.C. or working with pregnancy centers in their local communities.
