Christendom mourns the tragic passing of alumnus Michael Echaniz ’20, who was killed on March 10, 2022. A dear friend, son, brother, and uncle, known for his passion for education and evangelization, Echaniz was 23.
Michael’s memory will be honored in a permanent way through two memorials at Christendom College. The Michael Echaniz Debt Relief Scholarship for New Teachers will honor Michael’s memory by encouraging and supporting prospective teachers. The scholarship will be awarded each spring to one or more seniors at Christendom who are pursuing a career in education. The scholarship will help make that career possible by forgiving a portion of the recipient’s student loans.
Michael will also be honored through the creation of a custom clerestory window in the new Chapel of Christ the King. Sixty-six of these original 6’4 x 2’6 windows will encircle the upper nave of the new chapel, letting in a flood of colored light, and surrounding the faithful with the Communion of Saints. See, for example, St. Don Bosco. Michael’s family chose to honor Michael with a window of St. Cyprian. Cyprian is Michael’s middle name.
