On June 13, three Christendom alumni — Jonathan Fioramonti (’14), John Paul Heisler (’17), and Joseph Townsend (’11) — will be ordained to the transitional diaconate in Christendom’s home Diocese of Arlington. These alumni make up 75% of the class of the soon-to-be ordained deacons for the diocese. This is a major step forward in their journey toward the priesthood, and a beautiful testament to the wealth of vocations nurtured at Christendom College.

Jonathan Fioramonti graduated from Christendom with a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2014 and has since studied and prepared for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary. Fioramonti is excited to help others come to know Christ’s love through his vocational calling.

“[God] has given me so many blessings and I want more than anything to help others come to know His love. I believe God is calling me to do this in a special way as a priest,” Fioramonti told the Diocese of Arlington.

In the case of John-Paul Heisler, he began his priestly studies after his freshman year at Christendom, studying at The Catholic University of America’s and St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. According to Heisler, a major milestone in his discernment occurred while he was a freshman at Christendom, with former chaplain Fr. Donald Planty giving him the book To Save a Thousand Souls. After reading this book, Heisler knew that he was ready to continue his discernment process in the seminary.

Joseph Townsend graduated from Christendom in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and economics and worked in insurance for several years before becoming a seminarian. Townsend studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he grew more in love with his faith and his desire to become a priest. He spent the past year as a pastoral year at St. Ambrose parish in Annandale, Virginia.

“I have always had the desire to serve others in a meaningful way,” said Townsend. “I have been blessed to experience a great joy and sense of peace when receiving the Sacraments, and I want to share that peace and joy with others.”

These ordinations to the diaconate follow the recent ordination of Fr. Peter McShurley (’14) to the priesthood on June 6, making him the eighteenth Christendom alumnus to be ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Arlington. In addition, Fr. David McWhirter was ordained a priest for the FSSP on June 1. Later this month Rev. Mr. Miguel Flores-Perez (’02) will be ordained for the Archdiocese of Military Services, becoming Christendom’s ninety-fourth alumnus priest.
