Christendom's rugby team took third at the Moosman 7s Tournament in March.

Christendom’s rugby team traveled south for their second 7s tournament of the spring, handily winning their first four games of the tournament before falling in a tough semifinal match. Meanwhile at home, Christendom’s softball team played their season-opening doubleheader at home, falling in both games to Montgomery College.

Coming off their National Championship-winning rugby 15s run in the fall, Christendom’s rugby team entered the 7s portion of their season with high expectations. The first two tournaments of the spring have served as important regular season matchups for the team, giving them the important preparation time necessary for their hopeful Rugby 7s National Championship playoffs berth for this coming May.

After coming in second in the Frostbite 7s Tournament in February, Christendom headed to Tennessee this past weekend to compete in the Moosman 7s Tournament. They began tournament play against Suwannee, with Matthew Westin, Owen Kennedy, Thomas Santschi, and Chris Usher helping lead Christendom to a 40-7 victory. Their second game against Xavier played much the same way with Usher, Westin, and Andrew Mead leading Christendom to a 26-10 victory.

In the third game against Memphis, David Foeckler and Joseph Kokes got in on the action, with each scoring a try in addition to two more from Kennedy, sealing a 24-12 victory for Christendom. In the fourth game, Christendom’s defense was the star, shutting out MTSU and helping Christendom pick up an easy 33-0 victory.

The semifinal proved to be a tougher match for Christendom, with Principa breaking through Christendom’s defense while simultaneously holding back Christendom’s staunch offense. Christendom ultimately fell 24-5, before defeating Xavier 19-5 in the consolation match to take third in the tournament.

All in all, Christendom outscored their opponents 147-58 across all six games, all played on Saturday, March 19. Christendom will next travel to the University of Notre Dame to compete in the Collegiate Rugby Championship Premier Qualifier tournament next weekend for a shot at playing in the National Collegiate Rugby May Madness 7s Tournament in New Orleans in May.

Back at home, Christendom’s softball team competed in their season-opening doubleheader against Montgomery College. Playing with an almost entirely new team, Christendom struggled against Montgomery’s potent offense across both games, with Montgomery winning the first game 25-1 and the second game 25-4. Even during the two losses, there were bright spots in Christendom’s offense, with M.T. Coyne, Elizabeth Speer, and Amelia Coleman all picking up key RBIs for Christendom in the doubleheader.

The softball team will next compete in a doubleheader against Anne Arundel at home on March 24.
