Five members of Christendom’s rugby team were awarded 2021-22 Scholastic All-American honors from National Collegiate Rugby (NCR), as announced by the organization this past week. The awards honor the highest-performing student-athletes in college rugby, putting Christendom’s students in elite company.
Christopher Usher, Nicholas Ward, Samuel Wright, Pablo Boada and Jude Burkett were all named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2021-22 academic year. In order to qualify, each had to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher for the entire academic year and actively participate in either an A-Side 15s, 10s, or 7s match.
The student-athletes were all part of one of the most exciting and successful years in the rugby program’s history, including a thrilling 15s National Championship win in Houston in December of 2021 and a 7s National Championship runner-up in New Orleans in May.
The honors come in addition to numerous awards given to the rugby team this past year, including a Collegiate Rugby Championship 15s MVP award and an All-State Academic award given to Owen Kennedy ’22, several All-Tournament selections, a #1 national ranking, and more.
In addition to the rugby team, the rest of Christendom’s athletics program performed exceptionally well in 2021-22, with eighteen student-athletes in the fall and nineteen in the spring honored with USCAA Academic All-American awards and rising sophomore Catherine Thomas honored with a USCAA 1st Team All-American award.
Christendom’s athletic program seeks to develop students’ athletic abilities, build character, and encourage a healthy balance between academics and athletics. The college has a history of students being awarded for their athletic and academic talent, with many students earning Academic All-American, All-American, and Student-Athlete of Year honors over the years.
